- Abstract
Urbanization and industrialization has caused tremendous environmental problems in the 21st century. Both casting waste sand (CWS) and iron tailing sand (ITS) are solid wastes resulting from industrial processes. A large stock of solid waste occupies landfills and easily pollutes the environment. A series of experiments were conducted to investigate the potential of using the two solid wastes as road base materials. The granular composition and apparent density of the two types of materials were analyzed first. The two types of waste materials were mixed with crushed stones. Three different aggregate mix designs were obtained by adjusting the content and size of the crushed stones. The optimum design was obtained based on the criterion of high usage of the solid wastes and densities. Cement was used as the binder material, and the maximum dry density and the optimum moisture content using different cement dosages were determined based on the standard compaction test. The optimum mix design was then achieved based on the unconfined compressive strength of the compacted samples. A mix design with a cement content of 5% was found to be economic while also meeting the requirement in mechanical performance. The economy and environmental protection were evaluated by the test road. The results show that the use of CWS and ITS can save more than 20% of the cost, which has no adverse effect on the environment.
