It examines the role and influence of U.S. railroad company Lima, Ohio, Locomotive Works vice president of design William E. Woodard in designing high-powered locomotive engines. The article discusses Woodard's education and engineering innovations, how Lima Locomotive Works adjusted to changing economic conditions, and the impact of super-power locomotives on popular U.S. culture.
