- Abstract
The article discusses the history of the U.S. whaling industry and trade, giving primary focus to the investment practices of the many people associated with the trade. The role of Quakers, or the Society of Friends, in the foundation of the whaling industry in New Bedford, Massachusetts and Nantucket, Massachusetts is examined. The founding of various whaling companies in the 19th century is discussed, with emphasis given to the ownership and investment practices of these corporations, which ultimately proved unsuccessful.
