- Abstract
Hovenia dulcis belonging to family Rhamnaceae, known as Korean raisin tree or Huk gae, is one of the traditional medicinal plants. It is widely used in alcohol addiction prevention and relief of withdrawal symptoms as anti-hangover or hangover destroyer herbal medicine. Further, H. dulcis has been shown to possess anticancer, antidiabetic, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antioxidant properties. Its phytochemical substances are alkaloids, flavonoids, glycosides, and saponins. The other important constituents are hodulcin, hovenidulcioside, hovenidulcigenin, hovenine, hovenitins, hovenolactone, hovenoside, kaempferol, laricetrin, myricetin, perlolyrine, and quercetin, and all these contribute to its remedial properties. This article provides an up-to-date brief overview of the anti-hangover activity of H. dulcis to emphasize its importance.
