- Authors
Bloch, Amy R.
- Abstract
The article offers information on the design and construction undertaken by Italian artists Lorenzo Ghiberti and his son Vittorio on the frame for the south door of the Baptistery of San Giovanni in 1453 in Florence, Italy. It states that the 74-year-old Lorenzo and Vitorrio were given order to surround set of bronze doors constructed by Andrea Pisano with a frame. It cites that after the death of Lorenzo, Vittorio assumed full control of the project, wherein he and the members of his workshop mainly contributed to the completion of the frame. The frame was designed differently from the north and east doors, which was also designed by Lorenzo, wherein there is an absence of flora and fauna. The frame was designed with reliefs of a man and a woman on the lowest portions of the frame.
