TYPES OF STONE AXES IN THE SOUTHWEST.
- Authors
REED, ERIK K.
- Abstract
The article presents information on the different types of axes that have been discovered in the southwestern United States. It examines both long-bitted and short-bitted axes. The major types of axes include the San Juan, the Rio Grande and Gila axes. The San Juan axe is believed to be of Anasazi origin with the Rio Grande axe being of later origin. The Gila axe, typically made of hard stone such as diorite, is associated with the Hohokam and Pueblo peoples as well as those in the Mogollon group.
