Disinterring History at Papine.
- Authors
FRANCIS-BROWN, SUZANNE
- Abstract
This article presents information about the efforts of archaeologists in Jamaica to uncover the story of the people who lived in an area called the Papine estate village site on the Mona campus of the University of the West Indies (UWI). The archaeological dig was started in 2008 under license from the Jamaica National Heritage Trust and with the permission of UWI. Such sites are the result of an effort to uncover material culture of slavery at sugar plantations on the island so that it can be compared to slavery in the U.S. South and other areas. Ownership and use background of the estate is provided.
