- Abstract
The aim of this research was to identify the types of accidents among workers involving human tissue in order to raise the profile of the victims, the type of exposure, and the circumstances in which accidents occurred. This was a retrospective and descriptive study based on documents. Data collection was performed using the records of the Information System for Notifiable Diseases (SINAN) in a referral hospital for infectious diseases in Ceará, a total of 777 cases. The results show that 94.7% of those affected were female, 57.5% were nursing assistants, 88% of cases were due to percutaneous exposure, 70.1% being caused by hollow needles, 87.3% with exposure to blood, and 13.7% were related to inappropriate disposal of perforating objects at the bench, bedside, etc.. We conclude that more attention must be given to the prevention of such accidents, as well as to strict follow-up after occupational exposure.
