The article evaluates the representations of Basque sheepmen in contemporary western American fiction, exploring their image and connections to the pastoral trope in novels and short stories published after Robert Laxalt's "Sweet Promised Land." Topics covered include the varied roles of Basque sheepherders western U.S. fiction, the role played by pastoral elements in today's postmodern culture and literature, and the pastoral ideology in U.S. literature.
