- Abstract
One aim in Herbst therapy of Class II, division 1 malocclusions is the straightening of the convex Class II profile. This publication deals with the short- and long-term effects of Herbst treatment on the facial profile and the question, "Are the profile changes influenced by the existing facial growth type (high-angle or low-angle)?" Lateral facial photographs and lateral radiographs were evaluated. Assessed were the convexity of the face, with and without the nose, as well as the distances of the upper and lower lips to the E-line. The results revealed that the Herbst appliance reliably straightens the facial profile. The facial profile convexity is reduced, and the distances of the lips to the E-line are increased. In the long term, the profile convexity increases, and the distances of the upper and lower lips to the E-line continue to increase. These long-term changes can be explained by the genetically predetermined continuous growth of the nose and chin and by the facial growth type: high-angle or low-angle.
