- Abstract
The most often used approach of treating Class II malocclusions is to distalize the maxillary molars and later retract the premolars and the anterior teeth. Over the past decades, various appliances that require no patient cooperation have been introduced for this kind of treatment, especially of the fi rst part. Progress was made when these appliances were coupled with orthodontic mini-implants. Side effects from appliances fi xed in the dentoalveolar region can be avoided or minimized with skeletal anchorage devices, since unavoidable reciprocal forces can be compensated by mini-implants. This article illustrates the function and biomechanical concept of treatment using the advanced molar distalization appliance (amda) in the treatment of a 17-year-old patient. With this appliance, it is possible not only to achieve symmetric and asymmetric bodily distalization of the molars but also to retain the molars in position for the retraction of the premolars and anterior teeth. Other options to use an amda includes unilateral and asymmetric distalization, bilateral mesialization, or combination of unilateral mesialization and distalization.
