- Title
Cross-Cultural Music: Japanese Flutes and their Influence on Western Flute Music.
- Authors
Shimada, Akiko
- Abstract
The article discusses the characteristics of the Japanese flutes and their influence on Western flute music. It is stated that Western classical music embodies the cross-cultural music. Japanese music, on the other hand, captures the spiritual aspects as well as the tone color, says the author. The basic types of Japanese flutes are the vertical and transverse. Shakuhachi is a vertical flute made out of bamboo. Embouchure techniques for playing the flute are presented. Examples of a transverse flute are the shinobue and the noh-kan.
