- Abstract
This review article answers the question of when in the history of civilisation did people become aware of ageing and what attitudes towards older people were developed in different cultures. This article presents writings about age in different literary periods. Some of the findings are still relevant today. From the literature review in this paper, we conclude that interest in the phenomena of longer life has started to grow when life expectancy has started to increase and the number of older adults in society has started to grow as a consequence. Since the 1990s, we have witnessed an escalation in the various theories of age and ageing and their classifications. Despite the constant research and theorising on ageing and old age, we have concluded that old age cannot be defined by a single, multidisciplinary definition and that it is unlikely that it will ever be, because the concept of old age and ageing is too complex to be explained in a few lines.
