The article profiles Richard Gedye, who is the Research Director at OUP. Gedye's professional career before he got the current position is examined, focusing on his work as a marketing assistant at publishing company Macmillan. His experience at the company taught him how to work with publishers and academics on a worldwide basis. He joined OUP in 1991, where he began at the company as Science Journals Marketing Manager. The author analyzes the steps Gedye took to go from that position to general research director.
