- Title
A New Interpretation of Frithiof's Steel Shoes.
- Authors
Thurber, Beverly A.
- Abstract
The article offers criticism on the 1825 poem "Frithiofs saga," by Esaias Tegnér. The author focuses on the word "stålskor," meaning steel show, in reference to Frithiof's shoes in canto 18 of the poem, suggesting that it could be translated as "crampons" rather than "ice skates." The author describes translations and illustrations of the poem interpreting the word as referring to ice skates and suggests that archaeological evidence of Vikings supports the idea of the "stålskor" as crampons.
