BURGE, DANIEL
- Abstract
In the period from 1846 to 1858, opponents of Manifest Destiny brought forth a comprehensive critique of the ideology. Relying heavily upon humor, they highlighted its ethical and religious inconsistencies. In doing so, they managed to blunt the appeal ofManifest Destiny, which restrained the growth of the American empire.
