- Title
A New Identification of the Addressee of a Late Letter by Laurence Sterne.
- Authors
Goring, Paul
- Abstract
The author argues that the recipient of a letter from 18th century author Laurence Sterne was Luke Scrafton, who worked for the East India Company, and not his coworker Laurence Sulivan as was claimed in a 2009 Florida Edition of Sterne's letters. Editor Lewis Perry Curtis' speculation on the identity of the letter's addressee is discussed, as well as the content of the letter referring to Sterne's appreciation of visual art. Scrafton's trip to Italy and the letter's reference to a portrait of Anne James by artist Benjamin West are also mentioned.
