Abstract
The article compares the understandings in which 19th century Karelian peasants shared concerning songs about the mythical Sampo with those evident in the epic "Kalevala." The author provides characteristics of Sampo songs, discusses the mythic status of epic hero Vainamoinen, and explores agriculturally-related conceptions of the Sampo songs.
