- Title
Transforming A Union.
- Authors
Cervantes-Gautschi, Peter
- Abstract
This article focuses on the process of transforming the Hotel Employees and Restaurant Employees International Union Local 2 into a union large enough to effectively counterbalance the financial power of employees. Between 2002 and 2005 the union underwent a series of changes that are so profound that they demonstrate how the labor movement can rejuvenate itself. Local 2 went from a staid outfit that had a hard time coordinating its own staff into a dynamic union that mobilizes thousands of people and continues to fight for progressive change today. This shows that unions can restructure to organize successfully.
