- Abstract
This article examines the concept of "sonic labor" in the context of Richmond, Virginia, with a focus on the musical In the Heights and the Nuestras Historias exhibit. It discusses how sound is used to amplify the experiences and struggles of Latinx and BIPOC communities in Richmond, highlighting specific examples such as the unveiling of the Maggie Walker statue, the production of In the Heights, and the Nuestras Historias exhibit. The article explores the challenges and shortcomings in representing and including these communities in the arts, particularly in the film adaptation of In the Heights. It emphasizes the importance of valuing and listening to the sonic labor of Latinx cultural workers and calls for greater equity and representation in the theater industry. The article also discusses the different approaches to community engagement taken by the Virginia Rep Theatre and the Valentine Museum, highlighting the need for meaningful engagement and investment in Latinx audiences to create a fully inclusive American theater.
