Effect of Oxygen on the Electron Spin Resonance Spectrum of α,α′-Diphenyl-β-picrylhydrazyl.

- Abstract
IT has been found that under certain conditions gaseous oxygen can have a marked effect on the electron spin resonance line of α,α′-diphenyl-β-picrylhydrazyl. Normally that substance crystallizes with one molecule of solvent per radical and does not exhibit this 'oxygen effect'. It is possible, however, to remove most of this solvent by heating the radical at 80° C. under high vacuum for several days. (There is no evidence that the radical is destroyed by this treatment.) The magnitude of the resonance line from a treated sample of α,α′-diphenyl-β-picrylhydrazyl depends strongly on the pressure of oxygen over the sample. The effect is similar to that observed in carbons, and appears to be a combination of the two extreme cases reported1.
