- Abstract
O jejum alimentar produz diferentes impactos no processo digestivo, que vão desde a redução do aporte de compostos energético até modificações no comportamento dos cavalos. Os cavalos de esporte são regularmente submetidos a algum tipo de jejum, seja devido ao modelo de alojamento ou durante o transporte para os eventos esportivos. A hipótese desse trabalho foi de que o jejum reduz o pH fecal em cavalos atletas. Desta forma, objetivou-se determinar o pH fecal em equinos de vaquejada (n = 17; VAQ), marcha (n = 16; MAR) e passeio (n = 13, PAS) alojados em centros de treinamento em Pernambuco. Amostras de fezes de cavalos atletas adultos, de ambos os sexos e em competição, foram colhidas após defecação natural em três ocasiões: antes do jejum, após 12-14 horas de jejum, 24 horas após a reintrodução dos alimentos (forragens e concentrado). O pH foi mensurado imediatamente após a defecação com equipamento portátil, com aplicação do sensor do equipamento diretamente nas fezes (Oakton pH Spear 35634-40, Oakton Instruments, USA). Os resultados foram submetidos ao ANOVA com dois fatores (esporte e fase) e ao teste de Tukey, ambos com p < 0,05. Com o jejum, o pH mais elevados foi no grupo MAR (6,86 ± 0,15), e o mais baixo nos grupos VAQ (6,09 ± 0,14) e PAS (6,15 ± 0,16) (p < 0,001). Os resultados indicam que um jejum de 12-14 horas já modifica o pH fecal nos equinos de esporte e pode causar maiores impactos na função digestiva dos animais, comprometendo a saúde e o bemestar desses animais. Desta forma, devem ser adotadas medidas para reduzir o intervalo entre o fornecimento de alimentos, principalmente de forragens, seja durante o transporte ou nos locais de estabulação.
