- Abstract
This article discusses the unusual behavior of pufferfish aggregating at cleaning stations of a silver batfish in an Australian estuary. Cleaning symbiosis is a mutualistic relationship where cleaner fish remove parasites and other unwanted material from client fish. While pufferfish are rarely cleaned at these stations, the author observed multiple instances of pufferfish being actively and consistently cleaned by small cleaners. The author suggests that the aggregations make the pufferfish more noticeable to the cleaner fish, leading to increased cleaning behavior. This study highlights the need for more research on the behavior of clients in cleaning symbiosis.
