- Abstract
The shoreline environment has been considered as a primary concern in most parts of the globe. A significant trend of erosion and accretion is primarily experienced on the Puri coast of the Bay of Bengal at the mouth of Mangala river. The dunes are formed more often, so the river mouth is shifting as well as a new mouth is opening. The satellite images from 1998 to 2021 of the study area are used to detect the shoreline change and the river mouth shifting. The GIS tools and Digital Shoreline Analysis System toolbar have been used for analyzing the shoreline changes. It is found that the shoreline of the Mangala river mouth is accredited with an average rate of accretion of 3.49 m/year. A total of forty number of transects are formed along with none as erosional transects, which means all the transects formed undergo 100% of accretion. The transects have 87.5% statistically significant accretion. The maximum value of accretion obtained as 6.11 m/year. This study intends to describe the possible causes and consequences of shoreline changes in the Mangala river mouth and the need for necessary precautionary measures.
