- Abstract
Objective: To synthesize the evidence available in the literature regarding the indication of frenotomy in children with ankyloglossia and its possible benefits. Method: in six stages: (1) identification of the theme and selection of the research question; (2) establishment of the inclusion and exclusion criteria of studies; (3) definition of the information to be extracted from the selected studies; (4) categorization of studies, evaluation of the studies included in the review; (5) interpretation of the results and presentation of the review and (6) synthesis of knowledge. The north question is: What is the evidence about the indication of frenotomy in children with anchyloglossia? The search of the articles took place in the databases: PubMed; Lilacs, via Virtual Health Library; Scielo and Web of Science. For eligible studies that met all inclusion and exclusion criteria, a data extraction tool was constructed to collect and store the main characteristics of the studies and the results were presented through narrative synthesis and tables and graphs. Results: 18 articles addressing the researched question were selected. Most articles addressed the relationship between frenotomy and breastfeeding, some with the parental perspective and others evidencing alternative strategies to frenotomy. Conclusion: frenotomy is a procedure that presents improvement, especially in the symptoms of breastfeeding difficulty and nipple pain.
