- Abstract
Introduction: Retroperitoneal liposarcoma (RLS) is a rare, heterogeneous tumor that presents with diagnostic difficulties owing to its size and location. Early detection of these tumors is not easy owing to its location in the retroperitoneum that allows room for it to grow large. Symptoms become apparent only, once the tumor becomes very large and/or invades into the adjacent organs. Case report: Here we report a case of a 59 years old woman with a history of abdominal pain and distension. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CECT) abdomen and pelvis revealed that the mass invaded the left retroperitoneal space, anterior and inferior to the left kidney. Complete resection of tumor mass along with nephrectomy was performed. Discussion: Treatment for Retroperitoneal Liposarcoma includes surgical resection. In cases where the tumor invades into adjacent organs, chemotherapy may be used. Conclusion: Complete surgical resection of the liposarcoma is the only curative treatment, but establishing the prognosis remains a challenge. Due to its rate of recurrence, a lifelong follow up of liposarcoma patients is mandatory.
