- Title
Taking Obesity in Older Adults Seriously.
- Authors
Kritchevsky, Stephen B.
- Abstract
The author discusses the results of a randomized trial that compared exercise with dietary advice, exercise with a mildly hypocaloric diet, and exercise with a very low calorie diet (VLCD). He cites two questions raised by the study including the use of VLCD diets in older adults. He also examines the reasons for recommending weight loss for obese older adults such as increased risk of mortality and accelerated loss of skeletal lean mass and bone mineral density.
