- Abstract
The article focuses on various clinical complications, such as mechanical, chemical and thermal injuries and allergic reactions, associated with the use of dental impression materials. It states that some of the active components used in dental impression materials can cause injury if they contact the gingiva before polymerization takes place, while some can cause injury after the material polymerizes. It offers information on the hazards associated with six types of commonly used impression materials, including reversible hydrocolloid, irreversible hydrocolloid, polysulfide rubber, silicon and polyether. It mentions that polyether can cause acute abscess formation while polysulfide rubber may contain lead in a form which could present problems of gingival irritation and toxicity.
