- Abstract
With the objective of describing the business models of protected horticulture (PH) enterprises in the region of Texcoco, Mexico, the adoption of innovations and family integration of 36 family businesses was analyzed. A typology of enterprises was built, and the business models of the groups formed were described. In general, it was found that the businesses with problems in entrepreneurial succession are related to the low adoption of commercial and organizational innovations. The study identified traditional enterprises, with backward productive and commercial processes, businesses with emphasis on production, with productive innovations, but with serious managerial and commercial limitations; and integral businesses with high level of competitiveness and insertion in the market. The competition over water and land in the peri-urban environment of the region is a limiting factor for the development of PH, and only the enterprises that offer high-value products, with good technical and commercial performance, will be capable of remaining beyond the next generation.
