- Abstract
This article aims to examine a topic significant to comparative verse studies, poetics, and translation studies through quantitative data. Drawing on the insights of Mikhail Gasparov and Marco Praloran, we explore the characteristics of rhyme in the ottava rima works of Ludovico Ariosto and Torquato Tasso, as well as their translations into Spanish (by Juan de la Pezuela and Juan Sedeño) and Russian (by Aleksandr Triandafilidi and Roman Dubrovkin). By comparing the use of the rhyme device in the same poetic form but in different languages, we can shed light on relationships between verse and language and the challenge of achieving formal and functional equivalence in poetic translation. Our analysis reveals the differentiated use of categorial "easy rhyme" in the Italian originals and their Spanish translations, and the sufficiency of the Russian rhyming repertoire to cope with the form. To begin, we reflect on comparative verse studies' history and current developments.
