- Title
Marian Musings: Reflections on Blessed Virgins in Eighteenth-Century English Poetry.
- Authors
Sitter, John
- Abstract
The article focuses on the gender of personification in the 18th century English literature, and discusses the female personification of the Blessed Virgins appearing in English poetry in the 18th century, in the context of England being a Protestant country. According to writer James Harris, English is a good medium for personification because its nouns lack grammatical gender, and an English writer who refers to a thing or an idea as male or female begins to personify it. It discusses the place of Mary in Christianity, as depicted in several hymns and poems of 18th century poets such as Christopher Smart, Mary Chudleigh, Mark Akenside, Thomas Warton and William Collins.
