- Abstract
Classic British detective fiction is characterized by its focus on the truth-seeking process in rather rigid frames established by the rules of the genre. This process resembles solving a puzzle or a tricky mathematical problem with only limited possibilities for variation. One of the most important and complicated tasks for detective writers is to create a gripping and at the same time credible plot. The presence of Christmas in British detective fiction serves as an excellent spatial and temporal marker contributing to the credibility of events described. It helps to explain logically hermetic arrangement of setting in the text. By choosing an isolated, detached space as a crime scene and a limited number of characters as suspects, detective writers substantiate their choice by an explainable reason ñ traditions of Christmas celebration. The inclusion of festival attributes and celebrating traditions in the text strengthens the illusion of theatre performance and justifies the dominance of good over evil in the end.
