- Abstract
The article focuses on the study conducted by the Allhat Collaborative Research Group on major outcomes in high-risk hypertensive patients randomized to angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor or calcium channel blocker versus diuretic. The primary outcome was combined fatal coronary heart disease or nonfatal myocardial infarction, analyzed by intent-to-treat. Thiazide-type diuretics are superior to angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors and calcium-channel blockers in preventing one or more major forms of in high-risk patients with hypertension and in patients with hypertension and diabetes.
