- Abstract
The article explores the use of railroads as agricultural transportation in the U.S., including costs associated, consolidation among rail operators and the impact of the Staggers Rail Act of 1980. Topics discussed include the aim and drawbacks of the Interstate Commerce Act of 1887 and solutions offered by the Staggers Rail Act, the merger and acquisition activity after the implementation of the Staggers Rail Act, and the state and challenges facing the railroad industry in the 21st century.
