- Abstract
The article provides an overview of Julia Prest's book, "Public Theatre and the Enslaved People of Colonial Saint-Domingue," which examines the involvement of enslaved individuals in the theater of Saint-Domingue. It highlights the presence of black domestic servants in the audience and the close relationship between theater directors and slave owners. The analysis focuses on the role of black servants and the use of names in the play "Les Veuves créoles," emphasizing their contribution to satire and their ability to develop their own discourse. The article also discusses the presence of Creole language and the significance of names in the play. The Society for French Historical Studies permits the electronic distribution of their content for nonprofit educational purposes, with proper credit given to the author, publication date, and location on the H-France website.
