- Title
THIS AS THAT: Friendly Amendments to James McClendon's "baptist" Vision.
- Authors
Harvey, Barry
- Abstract
This essay examines four discrepancies in the theology of James McClendon. First, his hermeneutical principle 'the church now is the primitive church and the church on judgment day' perpetuates a troublesome ambiguity in the univocal force that he attributes to the copula 'is'. Second, his claim that the 'is' is 'immediate' is also problematic, because it opens up the possibility of an unmediated connection to Jesus. Third, such an unmediated relationship does not treat adequately the fact that most Christians are Gentiles and not Jews. And finally, a question is raised about the project of denominational or confessional-specific theologies.
