WHO WAS THE AUTHOR OF L'HISTOIRE DES DÉSASTRES DE SAINT-DOMINGUE, PUBLISHED IN PARIS IN THE YEAR III?
- Authors
BENZAKEN, JEAN-CHARLES
- Abstract
The article attempts to prove the authorship of an anonymous French history, entitled "Histoire des déastre de Saint-Domingue," that was published in Paris, France sometime in the 1790s. The work provides an account of the abolition of slavery on the island of Saint-Domingue during France's Revolutionary period. The author examines a copy of the text that bears a handwritten inscription identifying the author as a citizen by the name of Laplace. The article explores why this citizen "Laplace" is most likely the text's true author.
