An essay is presented on scholar and political leader Aurobindo Ghose, with a particular focus on his epic poem "Illion: An Epic in Quantitative Hexameters" and its relationship to Victorian debates surrounding meter. British imperialism and Ghose's involvement with Indian anticolonial politics are also discussed. Other topics include social class, English national identity, and philology.
