- Abstract
The article describes a systematic examination of meta-analyses aimed at determining the extent to which candidate gene association studies augment understanding of genetic susceptibility to cancer. Source material included 161 meta-analyses and pooled analyses involving 18 cancer sites and almost 100 genes. Each analysis included at least 500 cases, and all were published in English prior to April, 2008. Collectively, a total of 344 gene-variant cancer associations were examined. Results indicate almost one-third of these had statistical significance.
