- Abstract
The article discusses the Women's Health Initiative Dietary Modification Trial in the United States and the incidence of breast cancer. The study randomly assigned postmenopausal women to a dietary modification intervention, which reduced total fat intake and increased consumption of fruit, vegetables, and grains, or to a comparison group. Data is provided showing participant demographics, body weight, and nutrient consumption, as well as blood biomarkers, tumor characteristics, and blood hormone concentrations. Clinical outcomes statistics and Kaplan-Meier estimates of risk are illustrated. The authors concluded that a low-fat dietary program did not significantly reduce the breast-cancer risk in postmenopausal women.
