- Abstract
The Region of the Guarani Jesuit Missions has been planning policies aimed at the development and preservation of historical properties as a method of increasing the potential for tourism since 1995. Among these projects at the beginning stages was the Brazilian Missions National Historical Park which was given more attention within the archaeological sites. The focus for study, the historical city of Sao Borja -RS, was the "first of the Seven Peoples Missions" to be founded in the second cycle of the Reducoes or Jesuit Missions in 1682. A municipality, which according to IPHAN (National Historic and Artistic Heritage Institute) has proven to hold a significant amount of resources of interesting patrimonial importance, related to heritage, history, culture and politics. Until recently this historical importance was not recognized by public authorities. The article was concerned in examining how local assets eventually contributed to the interpretation of the construction of identities and cultural representations in this space as well as the interpretation of these resources contributing to heritage policies locally and regionally.
