- Abstract
This article discusses the financial strain faced by caregivers of older Latinos enrolled in both Medicare and Medicaid, known as "dual eligibles." The study focuses on very old Mexican Americans and examines the sociocultural and health profile of dual eligibles and the relationship between dual eligibility and caregivers' financial strain. The findings show that dual eligibles have higher odds of financial stress for both caregivers and care recipients compared to non-duals. The article suggests the need for social services and supports for caregivers of dual eligibles and highlights the potential benefits of programs like Programs of All-inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE) in alleviating financial strain. It also emphasizes the importance of federal and state partnerships and innovative coverage models to support community-based care for dual-eligible and chronically ill Medicare beneficiaries. The article concludes by discussing the challenges and opportunities presented by the growing older adult population and the need for proactive government policies to address the unique care needs of dual-eligible beneficiaries.
