- Title
Recognizing and Treating Depression in Asian Americans.
- Authors
Yeung, Albert; Kam, Raymond
- Abstract
The article discusses the recognition and treatment of depression in Asian Americans. A direct, pragmatic problem-solving approach is culturally appropriate in handling personal crises. The limited use of mental health services among Asian Americans was attributed to language barriers, financial resources, time constraints and knowledge of access to treatment. Culture influences the formation and presentation of psychiatric problems and patients' beliefs about illness.
