- Abstract
The essay "Metaphysical Realism. Arthur Schopenhauer's Philosophy of Will in Theodor Fontane's Narrative Works" by Sophia Wege examines the traces of Schopenhauer's thinking in Fontane's works. The reception of Schopenhauer's philosophy in European literature, music, and visual arts is illuminated, with particular emphasis on the influences on Russian, French, English, and Scandinavian authors. The work shows that Fontane engaged intensively with Schopenhauer's ideas and that his work is not just superficial entertainment literature, but also contains profound philosophical aspects. The essay is based on thorough research and offers convincing interpretations of Fontane's texts. The present study examines the reception of Schopenhauer's philosophy in the works of the writer Theodor Fontane. The author shows that Fontane maintained a close friendship with Carl Ferdinand Wiesike, a landowner and follower of Schopenhauer. Through conversations with Wiesike, Fontane was able to deepen his knowledge of metaphysics of the will. The study suggests that Fontane has at least read parts of Schopenhauer's main work. Research on Fontane has largely overlooked these traces of reception, which can be attributed to an ideologically biased edition of the Schopenhauer excerpts. The study shows how Fontane's works were influenced by Schopenhauer's philosophy and illuminates the connection between the two thinkers.
