- Abstract
In 1913, Filippo De Filippi (1869-1938) carried out an expedition from Srinagar to Tashkent, crossing Kashmīr, Baltistān and Ladākh, up to the Karakorum. It was a "multidisciplinary" expedition, aiming to carry out surveys and analyses in various fields, like geology, geography and astronomy. For the first time, the team led by De Filippi used an anastigmatic photo-camera, in order to systematically document the surveyed sites and their people, making a sort of reportage. This is particularly interesting as far as the cultural heritage record is concerned. The photo archive, now stored in Florence, is really valuable to understand the art and architecture of those different regions, mainly Ladakh and Baltistan: a good example is represented by the photos of the wooden mosques of Baltistan, because the pictures show us the buildings in a state that no longer exists, because today the same structures have been heavily modified or have completely collapsed.
