Discusses an outbreak of primary and secondary syphilis, a sexually transmitted disease (STD), in Guilford County, North Carolina from 1996 to 1997. How factors associated with the epidemic were assessed; Patients being more likely to have used illicit drugs at some time since 1978; How the North Carolina HIV/STD Prevention and Care Section and Guilford County Health Department, in collaboration with local community organizations, attempted to control the increase of cases in Guilford County.
