- Abstract
Research of quantitative approach, descriptive and transversal study aimed to describe the activities performed by a companion during labor and delivery, as well as comparing the experience with and without the companion during labor. Participants were 105 postpartum women admitted between September and October 2008 with previous experience of childbirth unescorted and current experience of childbirth with a companion. Data were collected through a semistructured interview and processed in the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences with simple statistical treatment. The results show that the main activities developed by the companions were a constant presence, touch, verbalizing words of encouragement, and massages. By comparing the experiences, 81.9% considered best the present delivery, where the presence of the companion was decisive for this choice in 46.6% of cases. The experience of being accompanied during labor is positive reinforcing the importance of this character in the process of childbirth.
