- Abstract
The theory of oscillators in a modern-day undergraduate electronics curriculum is an extremely important subject as oscillators form core circuits in a variety of engineering areas such as computers, communications, and control systems. Hence, a deep understanding of fundamental concepts in oscillators is necessary to lay a strong foundation in electronic circuits for undergraduate students. This paper presents a synthesis of LC sinusoidal oscillators with a π-type feedback network. From the synthesis, classical topologies such as Colpitts and Hartley oscillators are derived. Alternative methods to derive LC oscillators with a noninverting amplifier and a noninverting π-type feedback network are presented. The oscillators are derived using the fundamental Barkhausen criteria for steady-state oscillation and the resonance criterion for the band-pass feedback network. A step-by-step procedure to derive a particular type of oscillator circuit is given. An approach to select the components of the feedback network is presented. It is also shown that the oscillator topologies derived using noninverting amplifier is similar in nature to those with inverting amplifier. The educational method presented provides a missing link between the first step (Barkhausen criteria) and the last step (oscillator circuit) in the theory of oscillators, which can be utilized as an effective tool in teaching fundamentals of LC oscillators.
