- Abstract
The article presents an exploration into the nature of historical and social recognition of genocide, the epistemological aspects of its historical representation, and the example of these factors in film. The 2002 motion picture "Ararat," by Atom Egoyan, is highlighted and contrasted with the 2009 film "Avatar," by James Cameron. The difference in how the two films engage with the theme of genocide is analyzed, criticizing the practice of using "safe" family entertainment genre films to address such traumatic and complex issues. Further analysis of Egoyan's film and its depiction of the Armenian Genocide is then provided.
