- Abstract
The article states that synthetic biology has the potential to offer alternative pathways to natural products. Synthetic biology refers to the use of use of computer modeling to study pathways and design oligonucleotide constructs for de novo synthesis. Activity in synthetic biology has perked up since 2004. The most significant development of the field for industry so far has been the allocation of $42.6 million to a synthetic biology team to produce the malaria drug artemisinin by Washington-based Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
